SubetaConfessions2: Positively fed up.

subetaconfessions2:

I left Subeta the other day, partially for my own personal reasons, but mainly because of Keith and his way of handling business. To quote myself on another, somewhat notorious (<3!) site:

It’s something I’d honestly been considering, what with Keith’s current business model seeming to be…

There are a few problems I have with this post. I really need to stop myself from replying to each of these, but here we go!

  1. Site Crashing: The site hasn’t crashed like it did two days ago in a pretty long time. I believe the big DDoS attack was the last time we were down for days (and actually this downtime was still a result of that. Our load balancer which we decommissioned was still being attacked months after we stopped using it which caused network issues). For the most part, we’ve been up and running (with lag here and there) for a pretty big stretch now, and prior to the DDoS we were in the same position.
  2. These aren’t just cosmetic changes. When I do something like change the way the pet page looks, I’ve also recoded the entire page. The backend of that page now uses modern calls, caches data more efficiently, etc. All of these things set us up for…
  3. NEW THINGS. Right now we couldn’t release the cults to the site. Our biggest data usage on the site at the moment is forums, and we expect that to do all kinds of crazy things when cults are released. People will move off their private off-site forums and on to the ones that are provided by us, and this will make our current database structure explode. We’re exploring our options, building our infrastructure and rewriting heavy pages to continue to move toward our goals. These things take time, testing, more time, and more testing. Unfortunately we’ve hit a limit where we can just keep tossing more RAM/CPU at the issue, and have to take steps to make Subeta run more efficiently.
  4. Profile rotations, while on a site run by me, have nothing to do with Subeta. This was an outside service that you signed up for.

I don’t not give a fuck about any user. We take users opinions very seriously, and like I said in a previous post, I’m still waiting for someone to point me to a feature that we’ve released and not taken tons of user feedback (including the pet page) into account. That doesn’t happen on any other site.

We take everything that every user says (even ones that I may not get along with on a personal level!) and try to turn that into something that everyone can enjoy. Because while every user has an opinion on how the site should work for them, it’s our job to turn that into the site working for every single user.

I’m sorry that you feel like it’s time to leave Subeta, and I hope you come back at some point in the future when you feel like it’s had the appropriate amount of attention paid to it.
