I did a little research and Googled Stormlight Workshop. I think it’d be harder to dismiss Thrage than many of you are thinking, and that’s probably why he’s remaining. He is not an employee. Stormlight Workshop LLC is owned by him and his three coworkers according to the registration documents of the company. The four admins all have ownership in the LLC, and thus Flight Rising.
I’m not really sure there are any easy procedures to kick out a legal owner of a website. Not without involving a lawyer, and that would require some time on the other admins’ behalves if they are considering that option.
As one of the minorities targeted by Thrage’s comments I still feel really uncomfortable about this whole situation, but I understand this isn’t an easy solve. I don’t like the choice to keep Thrage but I’m also unsure what else the other admins could do at this point considering he partially owns Stormlight Workshop, and I understand that’s a very tough place to be. I am personally reserving judgement until a little more time has passed. I have faith in Undel, Akiri, and Xhaz.
Little bit of confirmational insight, but it can be very difficult, legally costly, and time-consuming to remove someone in even a non-owner upper tier management position from a company or corporation, speaking from having personally seen it done.
Chances are good nothing will happen quickly— it might take months or longer to sort out the paperwork required to do so, theoretically speaking. So I’m personally not surprised, although I am biting my nails a bit, as it’s an incredibly delicate situation to have to move slowly on.
I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS SITUATION BUT I’M OFFERING MY INSIGHT.
If there are four owners (with an equal amount of ownership in the company) the three owners can vote to remove someone (even a partial owner) from the company.
That person would still have ownership and be allowed to vote on all things brought to the board (though, could obviously be outvoted on any matter)
Does anyone really understand Keith’s proposed changes to the Holiday shop? I… just… another form of currency, but one that gets deleted at the end of each holiday and doesn’t carry over? What’s the point? What’s wrong with just restocking as it is now; the majority of worthwhile items are already in holiday specific shops as it is, so people aren’t really missing much. I’m very confused and I have a faintly ominous feeling it’s just going to be implemented anyway, despite everyone else not really being on-board with it, either.
Carolyn and I don’t see why neopets got more popular than subeta? I mean subeta has customisable human avatars and better looking pets and better colours for pets and lots of spoofy items and it’s actually possible to get the pet you want without having to save up for like 3 years… Oh and also they don’t ban you for stupid reasons…
Look at some of these awesome pets/pet colours tho srsly:
Keith Here, the owner of Subeta! Just popping in here to say PLEASE BE NICE SUBETA USERS. xoxo.
Does anyone actually bother to do these anymore? I tried them one weekend, and felt it was a giant waste of time. Which, really sucks because when he was the weekend quest before he was revamped, it was always a nice small profit weekend. Nothing huge, but enough to make…
Just a FYI - Quests will never really be a sP sink since it usually involves buying the items from other users. That’s not removing sP from the economy.
How Quentin works is currently based on rarity of the items (so when new items are added to Quentin you still have an idea of how hard it will be to get them via the quest). There will be new items adding during October, so we can see how that works out :)
I really want to attend a meet up, but I feel I won’t fit in.
SERIOUSLY JUST GO. These are so much fun, everyone just sits around chatting. Check out the photos that are posted after a few of them and you’ll see just how different everyone who shows up is. We’re all from the internet :)
Some of you may already know me from LeakyCon. I unexpectedly became a volunteer last year at LeakyCon 2011, after a major debacle resulting in insane registration lines. I worked hard to keep people happy, deal with frustrated attendees, parents/chaperones, etc. In 2012 I was…
Essentially, what this comes down to, is another massive blow to the Leaky brand. Leakycon ist the only conference I’ve walked away from multiple times where people had so many things to complain about. I think that if it weren’t for the awesome people who attend, it’d be a lot more negative.
This all could have been easily avoided with a contract. Melissa has said that because there was no money involved in Leakynews, that there wasn’t a contract in place when it started, but that is a terrible idea. Every single company should start with a contract in place between founders (and employees after that!) regardless of how much money the company is making (or not making).
I think that we will see this play out, but the only thing I can say is that I’m sure the people at hypable are laughing.
but I liked it better when it didn’t reblog everything in the subeta tag.
I stopped following it for a long time because it got to a point where they just reblogged art, art, and more art. Stuff that I already see by tracking the Subeta tag. It got repetitive and…
1. Reblogging from the Subeta tag means that people who don’t follow the Subeta tag but do follow the Subeta tumblr get a chance to see that stuff. Notice how when something gets reblogged by Subeta suddenly it gets 20-100 more likes? Everyone doesn’t track #subeta.
2. Everytime there is original anything anywhere but on the site there are a thousand complaints. We’re still going to continue doing it, but just keep that in mind.
I especially love how the subeta economy is being crashed on purpose, quests are giving out significantly less than they used to, and ask for items that are just too pricey to even complete the quest. Why do I want to burn through 40 wizard quests and 30 sagittarius quests with more often than…
It’s not being crashed on purpose.
Let me try and clear a few things up.
All quests are going to be eventually changed. The whole scheme of the change will hopefully make more sense once this happens. Right now a single quest (quentin) has been changed.
A lot of people who are frequently discussing the removal of sP from Quentin did not frequently do the quests prior to the change (most of them are achievement users who did the amount required for the top achievement, and then stopped) so while I understand the outrage at the change, a lot of these are from people who did not do them.
Quentin was one of the most infrequently done quests (something like 70% of quests done daily are, of course, wizard quests) and so a change was needed.
Our goal going forward is to give each quest something unique to ask for (Quentin is now an awesome way for you to save up those thousands of event items you get, put them in your vault and wait for them to start being asked for) and something unique to give back. We removed the items from the graveyard shop and instead gave them to Quentin. Obviously right now that isn’t very fun, because you are getting items that have been on the site for years and have deflated (or are useless). We have plans (especially in Morostide) to really beef up that pool of items with interesting things that we think people will really like, and will make it worth it to do the quests.
This is our goal for all of the quests. Let me be very clear, I hate the idea that people feel like they have to buy CSC to earn sP. Neopets took a different path than us (you can’t trade credits) but I wanted CSC to be available for everyone and something that anyone could get by just playing Subeta. Most of our features don’t require CSC, just ‘account upgrades’ and some cool items in the cash shop (Which we’ve released less of this year than ever).
Also fyi I hate zynga with every fiber of my being. If we are becoming like them in anyones eyes that is the absolute opposite of my goal which is to create a place that is the most fair that it could possibly be on the internets.
Again, I really hope that things start to make more sense once more quests are pushed out with their changes.
Seriously though to anyone who loves charahub when something breaks you can tweet at me (@keithkurson) and I will see it way faster than something in this tag and…
This makes me really warm and fuzzy inside! I’m glad that we’ve hit a note with a lot of people in ‘our’ community who didn’t realize this was something they needed but now really do see a huge value in it!
You guys don’t get it. I don’t care that she has an opinion. My issue is as a staff member, you don’t fucking say negative things about the site and it’s workers where people can read it. I also said it’s not the first time it’s been said either, as she’s said it on other sites too even more public than Subeta Drama. It’s poor professionalism. It’s poor period. Learn to read.
I’ve said before myself that the shoutbox is a place where rules are broken on an almost constant basis. There are more rules broken in an hour (sometimes half hour) in the SB than there are on the entire site otherwise.
I think that maybe because it’s live chat and that lends itself to a quickly degrading situation (that the moderators then have to give warnings and say please stop, and most of the time the users in the SB complain/bitch at the UA in non-rule breaking but annoying ways) is why it happens, but yeah. The shoutbox typically sucks for the people moderating it.
Staff members are welcome to their own opinions and I don’t think that these ones were out of line or something to be punished (or fired!) for.
I left Subeta the other day, partially for my own personal reasons, but mainly because of Keith and his way of handling business. To quote myself on another, somewhat notorious (<3!) site:
”It’s something I’d honestly been considering, what with Keith’s current business model seeming to be…
There are a few problems I have with this post. I really need to stop myself from replying to each of these, but here we go!
Site Crashing: The site hasn’t crashed like it did two days ago in a pretty long time. I believe the big DDoS attack was the last time we were down for days (and actually this downtime was still a result of that. Our load balancer which we decommissioned was still being attacked months after we stopped using it which caused network issues). For the most part, we’ve been up and running (with lag here and there) for a pretty big stretch now, and prior to the DDoS we were in the same position.
These aren’t just cosmetic changes. When I do something like change the way the pet page looks, I’ve also recoded the entire page. The backend of that page now uses modern calls, caches data more efficiently, etc. All of these things set us up for…
NEW THINGS. Right now we couldn’t release the cults to the site. Our biggest data usage on the site at the moment is forums, and we expect that to do all kinds of crazy things when cults are released. People will move off their private off-site forums and on to the ones that are provided by us, and this will make our current database structure explode. We’re exploring our options, building our infrastructure and rewriting heavy pages to continue to move toward our goals. These things take time, testing, more time, and more testing. Unfortunately we’ve hit a limit where we can just keep tossing more RAM/CPU at the issue, and have to take steps to make Subeta run more efficiently.
Profile rotations, while on a site run by me, have nothing to do with Subeta. This was an outside service that you signed up for.
I don’t not give a fuck about any user. We take users opinions very seriously, and like I said in a previous post, I’m still waiting for someone to point me to a feature that we’ve released and not taken tons of user feedback (including the pet page) into account. That doesn’t happen on any other site.
We take everything that every user says (even ones that I may not get along with on a personal level!) and try to turn that into something that everyone can enjoy. Because while every user has an opinion on how the site should work for them, it’s our job to turn that into the site working for every single user.
I’m sorry that you feel like it’s time to leave Subeta, and I hope you come back at some point in the future when you feel like it’s had the appropriate amount of attention paid to it.
Let me first tell you where these things were stored. Because they were really, at the most, side projects that didn’t need any dedication from me they were running on my personal server at Softlayer. This is a server that I pay for myself, and run pretty…
Shit like this makes us wonder if you LEARN anything Keith. Remember the great server crash of last year? Jesus Christ, get your shit together and keep it together.
Shit happens, but you’ve been a site owner since you were sixteen. We figured you would’ve learned by now.
The giant subeta server crash? Yes, I did learn. Subeta is now backed up multiple times weekly, as is all important data.
Do I consider my CSS rotation site on my personal domain that I haven’t touched in five years to be important data? No. Do I think about it when I’m running through all of the data that needs to be backed up frequently in case of a drive failure? Nope.
I feel badly for everyone who lost profiles and code in this, and I hope that they get get them again from wherever they commissioned them (or made them). I think that the values you discussed in your post goes both ways, though, and I hope that everyone had a copy of their data.
Been wanting to say this for a while, good job Jessi, pulling every connection you can get to get a job as an ‘artist.’
Marry staff, get hired! Wish I knew it was that easy…
She isn’t an artist, she is working with us in the various queues on the site. She is the reason that the Custom Item queue is being paid far more attention to, as well as the pet spotlight queue.
It has nothing to do with the fact that she is married to Hagane, but that she is a dedicated Subeta user with an attention to detail as well as having already had a basic understanding of our processes.
Let me first tell you where these things were stored. Because they were really, at the most, side projects that didn’t need any dedication from me they were running on my personal server at Softlayer. This is a server that I pay for myself, and run pretty much in my spare time. It’s home to my personal site (keithkurson.net) and pretty much all of my personal files.
I don’t do much with this server. If I have a new project it’s incubated here, but as I’ve told people over the years that omgimages is not in production and I highly suggest moving off it, none of it seemed important enough to pay any sort of attention to.
Last week, the server suffered a drive failure. With a lot of time in rescue environments, lots of drive utilities, I managed to get off the majority of the files, but nothing from the database. They were moved to a secondary drive.
After having an OS reload on the main drive, and mounting the second drive to at least recover what few things I could, the second drive crashed.
This is pretty bad luck. I’ve handed it over to professionals who know a lot more about these kind of things that I do, however I’m told right now that unless I want to pay thousands of dollars, things are grim.
Those of you who are OMGimages users, I highly suggest using imgur. It’s what I use myself, and is a service I think is way better than omgimages.
Those of you using the CSS rotation, right now it’s unlikely any of the layouts will be recovered. I’m going to keep you updated (and hopefully get keithkurson.net up in any capacity in the next few days, idk, I’ve really lost a lot there and I have so much to do to get it back up) and I hope that we can recover everything…
The moral of this story is that backups are really important. I should have had backups of the data, and I hope that all of you are smarter than me and have backups of the information you put on these sites.
Wasn’t the drama, I can handle reading a bunch of dramatic brats. What put me over the edge was all the things they “fixed” that weren’t broke in the first place. (cw rule changing more than most people change their underwear, various unnecessary art revamps, news layout mess, pet page layout…
If by ‘just deal with it’ you mean spending weeks making changes based on user feedback, while still keeping the original idea intact.
All of the changes that we’ve made have been data-inspired (people only read above the fold on the news page, new users find the mass of links on the pet page to be entirely complicated and the page itself had a massive bounce rate for new users, the battle system is fundamentally broken and needed an overhaul to set it right) and that means that someone is going to be upset about the change. However, for the majority of users (which is how we have to make choices) they are typically the right decisions.
As I’ve said on the forums, I’m sorry if any of the above changes (or any changes at all) have upset you. This isn’t a “we are right, you are wrong” situation because we are frequently wrong. This is a “instead of writing on confession site primarily used to slander, make a couple posts in the feedback thread on how you would improve these features" and hopefully we can make the site better together.
I should now have a free ride through the Battle Colliseum.
Yes people, the site is intentionally doing this, next week will be the release of 300.00 “donation” weapons that are tier 1 and work like godlies.
Last night we released a new weapon in the CS and it’s the first weapon we’ve put in there literally in years. I hate releasing BC related items into the CS (except the monthly item in the collection, which no one even gets) and it’s unlikely we will be doing another item for years again.
Awesome, a name I’ve been waiting for since the owner got frozen 2 years ago cleared today - for a minimod.
The name wasn’t set to clear for another month.
And that’s why I won’t be playing Subeta anymore.
Could you sMail me on Subeta the name of the account? I’d be happy to look into it. I can send the code for the clearing if you’d like, there were no extra accounts or anything added, all of the accounts that cleared were meant to be cleared.
I don’t understand how this is more efficient other than looking eye-pleasing and saving space.
I can no longer tell if my pet is male or female, the name of its colour isn’t there, I cannot see how many spots in its treasure it has/is occupied without clicking to find out, and I cannot view…
I hate to say this again, but existing users hate change. We are making changes to accommodate the changes they want, and working to try and make the best middle ground possible.
However, things like our statistics show a huge increase in engagement from new users who experience the new page. This is something we’re spending the summer focusing on, is making pages as easy to use for new members as possible. This means that sometimes we will have to make changes that existing users find difficult (because they’ve been using the old method for years) but it’s needed change.
I think one of the most telling examples of this is something like the username change (or pet name change) where people say that they liked it better when it was an item. The way it is now is clearly a better, and easier to understand system. People who are used to it being an item take for granted how hard these pages are to understand.
I really like that Keith and other staff set up meetups, but honestly, I think Keith needs to hold off spending hundreds on traveling and put all that money to better use. Why not use the money to pay staff and help keep the site running normally? I just find it a bit…
Where is the thousands of dollars made from CWs going then? The site is still a mess. Hire some new staff or something x.x You guys clearly have too much on your plate.
I love how oblivious people are about how many thousands of dollars it costs to host websites of this size every month.
They managed fine before the CW system and you can’t deny that it’s a massive source of income for the site. Which is great but I just don’t see many improvements being done to the site. The new CW shop is great but there are so many problems with the site right now.
I’ve also pointed out that we’ve really stopped releasing the number of CS items that we did prior to the CW release. This has free’d the creative department up to work on other things (like moderating the CW queue).
I really like that Keith and other staff set up meetups, but honestly, I think Keith needs to hold off spending hundreds on traveling and put all that money to better use. Why not use the money to pay staff and help keep the site running normally? I just find it a bit unprofessional.
None of the site money goes to my traveling. I’m paid to work on Subeta, and I use that money to travel (I also don’t rent an apartment, have a cellphone bill, or a car, etc) where I hold meetups :)
I am SO mad. I put two of my CWs in the new CW cash shop thing they have going. They told us that once we sold the first 10 of one item, that we would be getting one for free.
I was so excited, because I hated dealing with the forums all the time when I have been sick and…
I answered your question, we are unable to get those numbers back. If you sold 18 items last night, it’s probably not going to take you months to do that again.
Also, I imagine if you are like most CW artists you got a version of your item in the first batch. We made this “free item” as an incentive when we set the price to 500CSC, it almost didn’t make it to the 600CSC price change.
I’m sorry that you’re unhappy with this, but when I answered and said there is nothing that I could do, a UA isn’t going to be able to do anything. I hope you aren’t upset at their response, since it was obviously my response.
Now I know there are rules set in place for keeping people in check, and that the UAs, mods, and every other faculty member try to uphold them. However, how hard do they ACTUALLY try to solve some cases?
There have been speculations about this for several reasons, at many different times. One of…
The problem with this example is we don’t know these people. We have the information in front of us that shows they’ve logged in the same computer, sent items to each other, and a number of other factors that we use to identify multiple accounts (there is a 3+ requirement before we freeze!)
We can’t verify statements like “Oh, that’s just my friend!”, so while I’m sure your friends are really upset that they’re frozen, it’s just not something we can do unless we want everyone being frozen, which the majority of are legitimate cheaters.
Anyone want to buy the entire contents of my 2 years on subeta for 25 bucks? I have over 5k in wearables and a ton of sp and some great named pets. (No extra letters, common names) I spent probably, over 200$ on it over the years and I have basically all of the costume trunks, lots of retired stuff etc. I just want something back for all the money I spent. If you want details on all the crap I have/haggle prices just hit up my inbox.
